Getting Started

Card Types & Costs

There are several Istanbulkart variants, but tourists only need to care about one: the anonymous (anonim) card. Here's the full breakdown.

Standard Istanbulkart

Cost70 TL deposit + minimum 50 TL load
Per Ride~20 TL per ride (transfer discounts: 2nd ride ~12 TL, 3rd+ ~8 TL within 2 hours)

The card every Istanbul resident uses. Sold at machines in metro stations, ferry terminals, and some kiosks. Works on all public transit: trams, metro, buses, ferries, Marmaray, funiculars, and even some public restrooms. You keep the card and reload it indefinitely. One card can be tapped for multiple passengers (tap once per person), but only the first rider gets transfer discounts.

Anonim Istanbulkart (Tourist Card)

Recommended
Cost70 TL deposit (no ID required)
Per Ride~20 TL per ride (same transfer discounts as standard)

Functionally identical to a standard Istanbulkart, but purchased without ID. This is what most tourists buy. Available at the yellow/blue machines in metro and tram stations. You load credit and tap in/out. The 70 TL deposit is technically refundable at IETT offices, but most tourists just keep the card as a souvenir. Load at least 100 TL for a 3-day trip.

Blue Card (Student)

CostRequires valid Turkish student ID
Per Ride~7.50 TL per ride

Heavily discounted rate available only to students enrolled in Turkish educational institutions. Not available to foreign tourists. Requires application with student documents at IETT customer service offices.

60+ / Disabled Card

CostFree with valid Turkish ID (65+)
Per RideFree or heavily discounted

Available to Turkish residents aged 60+ or those with disability documentation. Not typically available to foreign tourists, though some visitors over 65 report success applying at IETT offices with a passport.

Routes & Lines

Key Routes for Tourists

Istanbul has dozens of transit lines, but tourists realistically use 5-8 of them. These are the lines that connect the major sights, neighborhoods, and transport hubs.

T1 Kabatas-BagcilarEssential
KabatasBagcilar(65 min end-to-end)
KabatasEminonuSirkeciGulhaneSultanahmetCemberlitasBeyazit-KapalicarsiLaleliAksaray

The single most important line for tourists. Connects the Galata Bridge area (Eminonu) to Sultanahmet's historic sites. Get on at Kabatas after taking the funicular from Taksim. It runs above ground through the Old City, passing the Spice Bazaar, Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and Grand Bazaar. Gets extremely crowded between 8-9 AM and 5-7 PM.

Every 3-5 min
M2 Yenikapi-HaciosmanUseful
YenikapiHaciosman(35 min end-to-end)
YenikapiSishaneTaksimOsmanbeySisli-MecidiyekoyLevent

Key metro line for the European side. Taksim station connects you to Istiklal Avenue. Osmanbey and Sisli have good shopping. Levent has modern malls. Transfer to Marmaray at Yenikapi to cross to the Asian side. Sishane station is a 2-minute walk to the top of Galata Tower.

Every 3-6 min
Marmaray (Halkali-Gebze)Essential
HalkaliGebze(105 min end-to-end (Sirkeci to Uskudar: 4 min))
YenikapiSirkeciUskudarAyrilikcesme (Kadikoy transfer)

The undersea Bosphorus tunnel. The Sirkeci-to-Uskudar segment is just 4 minutes and one of the most amazing rides in any city: you cross from Europe to Asia underwater. Use this instead of ferries when weather is bad or you're short on time. Connects to M2 metro at Yenikapi.

Every 5-10 min
F1 Taksim-KabatasEssential
TaksimKabatas(2 min)
TaksimKabatas

Short underground funicular connecting Taksim Square to Kabatas waterfront. Essential connector: at Kabatas you can transfer to the T1 tram (to Sultanahmet) or ferries to Kadikoy/Uskudar. The ride is only 2 minutes but saves you a steep 10-minute downhill walk.

Every 3-5 min
T5 Cibali-EminonuOptional
CibaliEminonu(12 min)
CibaliFenerBalatEminonu

Newer nostalgic tram line connecting the increasingly popular Fener-Balat neighborhoods to Eminonu. Useful if you're visiting the colorful houses of Balat or the Chora Church area. Much less crowded than T1. Runs along the Golden Horn waterfront.

Every 8-12 min
M4 Kadikoy-Sabiha GokcenUseful
KadikoySabiha Gokcen Airport(55 min end-to-end)
KadikoyAyrilikcesmeKartalSabiha Gokcen Airport

The Asian side metro. Starts at Kadikoy (transfer from Marmaray at Ayrilikcesme) and runs all the way to Sabiha Gokcen Airport. Useful if your hotel is on the Asian side or if you're flying out of SAW. Kadikoy station has a pedestrian tunnel to the famous Kadikoy fish market area.

Every 5-8 min
F2 Tunel (Karakoy-Beyoglu)Useful
KarakoyBeyoglu (Tunel Square)(1.5 min)
KarakoyBeyoglu

The world's second-oldest underground railway (1875). Saves you the steep uphill climb from Karakoy (near Galata Bridge) to the southern end of Istiklal Avenue. A fun piece of transport history. Exit at the top and you're steps from Galata Tower.

Every 3-5 min
M11 Gayrettepe-Istanbul AirportEssential
KagithaneIstanbul Airport (IST)(~35 min)
KagithaneKemerburgazIstanbul Airport

Opened in 2024, this metro line is the cheapest way to reach Istanbul Airport. At ~35 TL vs ~180 TL for Havaist bus, it's a massive saving. Transfer from M2 at Kagithane. Still being extended toward central locations; check current status as new stations may have opened in 2026.

Ferry Routes

Istanbul ferries are public transit that doubles as a Bosphorus cruise. Your Istanbulkart works on all city ferry lines. These are the routes worth knowing.

EminonuKadikoy
20 minEvery 15-20 min (peak), 30 min (off-peak)

The quintessential Istanbul ferry crossing. You pass the Maiden's Tower, see the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque receding behind you, and arrive at Kadikoy's buzzing food market. Arguably the most scenic 20 minutes of public transit on earth. Grab a tea (15 TL) from the onboard vendor and sit on the upper deck, starboard side.

Fare~20 TL (Istanbulkart)Scenic
EminonuUskudar
20 minEvery 15-20 min

Slightly different angle than the Kadikoy crossing, this route gives you exceptional views of the Maiden's Tower as you approach Uskudar. The Uskudar waterfront is more peaceful than Kadikoy, with excellent mosque views and the famous Mihrimah Sultan Mosque right at the dock.

Fare~20 TL (Istanbulkart)Scenic
KabatasKadikoy
20 minEvery 20-30 min

Alternative Bosphorus crossing departing from Kabatas (where the F1 funicular from Taksim arrives). Less crowded than Eminonu ferries. Good option if you're coming from Taksim/Beyoglu and heading to the Asian side without backtracking to Eminonu.

Fare~20 TL (Istanbulkart)Scenic
EminonuEyup
35 minEvery 30-45 min

A peaceful ride up the Golden Horn estuary, passing under the Galata Bridge and along the old city walls. Eyup is home to the Eyup Sultan Mosque, one of Islam's holiest sites, and the Pierre Loti Cable Car that takes you up the hill for panoramic views over the Golden Horn. Almost no tourists take this ferry.

Fare~20 TL (Istanbulkart)Scenic
EminonuAnadolu Kavagi
90 min one-way2-3 departures daily (10:35 AM is the main one)

The classic full-length Bosphorus cruise to the mouth of the Black Sea. Passes Dolmabahce Palace, Ortakoy Mosque, both Bosphorus bridges, Rumeli Fortress, and waterfront yali mansions. The boat stops at Anadolu Kavagi where you get 2-3 hours for lunch and a hike to the medieval Yoros Castle. The return trip departs around 3 PM. Total half-day commitment.

Fare~100 TL (full cruise, Istanbulkart works on Sehir Hatlari boats)Scenic
Kabatas or EminonuBuyukada (Princes' Islands)
75-90 minEvery 60-90 min (more frequent in summer)

A full day-trip escape to the Princes' Islands, a car-free archipelago in the Sea of Marmara. Buyukada (Big Island) is the main stop: Victorian-era mansions, horse carriages replaced by electric vehicles, pine forests, and swimming spots. The ferry ride itself is scenic with open-sea views. Best April through October.

Getting In

Airport Connections

Istanbul has two airports on opposite sides of the city. Your airport determines your transfer strategy.

Istanbul Airport (IST)

European Side

~40 km north of the city center. Opened 2018. Handles most international flights.

M11 Metro

~35 TL~35 min to Kagithane, then M2 transfer

The cheapest option since the M11 metro line opened in 2024. From the airport, take M11 to Kagithane, then transfer to M2 metro toward Taksim or Yenikapi. The total journey to Taksim takes about 50-60 minutes with the transfer. Istanbulkart works.

  1. 1Follow signs to Metro/M11 at the airport arrivals level
  2. 2Tap Istanbulkart at the turnstile (buy at the machine near the entrance if you don't have one)
  3. 3Take M11 to Kagithane station
  4. 4Transfer to M2 metro — direction Yenikapi for Taksim (southbound)
  5. 5Exit at Taksim for Beyoglu area, or continue to Yenikapi for Marmaray transfer to Asian side

Havaist Bus

~180 TL60-90 min to Taksim (traffic-dependent)

Direct buses to major hubs: Taksim, Sultanahmet, Yenikapi, Kadikoy. Comfortable coaches with luggage storage. Runs 24/7. The Taksim route is the most frequent (every 30 min). Buy tickets at the Havaist counter in the arrivals hall or tap Istanbulkart (Istanbulkart accepted on most routes). Traffic can double the journey time during rush hours — avoid 7-10 AM and 4-8 PM arrivals if possible.

  1. 1Exit arrivals and follow signs to Havaist buses (ground floor, outside)
  2. 2Check the departure board for your destination (Taksim is most common for tourists)
  3. 3Buy a ticket at the counter (~180 TL) or tap Istanbulkart
  4. 4Stow luggage in the bus cargo hold
  5. 5Taksim bus drops you at Taksim Square (Point Hotel area)

Taxi / Ride-hail

900-1,200 TL45-75 min (traffic-dependent)

Official airport taxis use meters (insist on it). BiTaksi app is the Turkish equivalent of Uber and provides fare estimates. Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet typically costs 900-1,200 TL depending on traffic. Late night (after 11 PM) is the fastest, cheapest window. Watch out for drivers who 'forget' to start the meter.

  1. 1Use the official taxi rank (follow yellow signs) or order via BiTaksi app
  2. 2Confirm the driver starts the meter before departing
  3. 3Typical route: TEM motorway to Taksim/Beyoglu area
  4. 4Toll roads (~30 TL) are added to the fare

Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW)

Asian Side

~50 km southeast of the city center. Budget airline hub (Pegasus, AnadoluJet). Farther from most tourist areas.

Havabus to Kadikoy

~120 TL60-90 min to Kadikoy

Direct bus to Kadikoy on the Asian side. From Kadikoy you can take the Eminonu ferry (20 min) or Marmaray metro to the European side. This is the budget backpacker's route. Buses run every 30 minutes during peak times. Kadikoy itself is an excellent neighborhood to base yourself in.

  1. 1Exit arrivals, find Havabus stop (signed, just outside)
  2. 2Board bus to Kadikoy (~120 TL, Istanbulkart not accepted on Havabus)
  3. 3Arrive at Kadikoy bus terminal (near the waterfront)
  4. 4Walk 10 min to Kadikoy ferry terminal for boats to Eminonu, or take M4 metro

Havabus to Taksim

~140 TL90-120 min (crosses Bosphorus by bridge)

Direct bus crossing the Bosphorus to Taksim on the European side. Long ride, especially in traffic. If your flight arrives during rush hour (4-8 PM weekdays), consider going to Kadikoy first and taking the ferry — it's actually faster. But for late-night arrivals, the direct Taksim bus is convenient.

  1. 1Exit arrivals, find Havabus stop for Taksim route
  2. 2Board bus (~140 TL)
  3. 3Bus crosses the 15 July Martyrs Bridge to the European side
  4. 4Final stop is Taksim Square area

M4 Metro via E9/SG1 Bus

~40 TL total30 min bus + 55 min metro to Kadikoy

The cheapest option from Sabiha Gokcen. Take the SG1 or E9 bus from the airport to Pendik or Kartal metro station, then ride the M4 metro to Kadikoy. Total cost is just two transit fares (~40 TL). Time-consuming but saves significant money for budget travelers.

  1. 1Take E9 bus from airport to Kartal metro station (or SG1 to Pendik)
  2. 2Tap Istanbulkart on the bus
  3. 3Transfer to M4 metro at Kartal or Pendik
  4. 4Ride M4 to Kadikoy (Ayrilikcesme for Marmaray transfer to European side)

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I buy an Istanbulkart?

Yellow or blue vending machines at any metro station, tram stop, or major ferry terminal. The machines have English-language options. Press 'New Card', insert 70 TL (cash only at most machines), then add your desired balance (minimum 50 TL load). The card dispenses immediately. You can also buy from small kiosks near transit stops — they sometimes charge a small markup (5-10 TL). Do NOT buy from people approaching you outside stations offering 'help' with cards.

How do I recharge (top up) my Istanbulkart?

Same yellow/blue machines where you buy them. Select 'Load Balance', place your card on the reader, insert cash or use a bank card. Many machines now accept contactless bank card payments. Minimum load is 20 TL. You can also recharge at thousands of corner kiosks around the city — look for the Istanbulkart sticker. The mobile Istanbulkart app supports NFC top-ups from Android phones.

Does the Istanbulkart work on ferries?

Yes, on all Sehir Hatlari (city lines) and IDO ferries. This includes the Eminonu-Kadikoy, Eminonu-Uskudar, Kabatas-Kadikoy routes, the Bosphorus cruise, and the Princes' Islands ferry. Tap your card at the ferry terminal turnstile before boarding. The same transfer discounts apply — if you took a metro or tram within the previous 2 hours, your ferry ride will be discounted.

Can two people share one Istanbulkart?

Yes. Tap the card once for the first person at the turnstile, wait for the gate to close, then tap again for the second person. The first tap gets any applicable transfer discount; the second tap is charged full fare. For couples, one card works fine. For groups of 3+, having two cards is more cost-effective due to transfer discount rules.

Can I use a contactless bank card or phone instead of Istanbulkart?

As of early 2026, Istanbul has been rolling out contactless bank card acceptance on newer turnstiles in metro stations. However, coverage is inconsistent — some stations accept Visa/Mastercard contactless, many don't. The per-ride cost with a bank card is the same, but you do NOT get transfer discounts. The Istanbulkart remains the better option for anyone taking 3+ rides per day.

Is my Istanbulkart deposit refundable?

Technically yes — you can return the card at IETT customer service centers (Taksim, Eminonu) for a 70 TL refund plus any remaining balance. In practice, the lines are long and the process takes 15-20 minutes. Most tourists keep the card as a souvenir or for their next trip. The card doesn't expire, so it'll still work if you return to Istanbul years later.

What happens if my Istanbulkart runs out of balance mid-trip?

On the metro/Marmaray, you need sufficient balance to tap in. If your balance hits negative during a Marmaray ride (tap-in/tap-out system), you can exit but the negative balance must be cleared before the next use. On buses, the driver will see 'insufficient balance' and you'll need to recharge or pay separately. Always keep at least 50 TL loaded.

How much should I load on my Istanbulkart for 3 days?

For a typical tourist taking 4-6 transit rides per day over 3 days (including ferries), load 200-250 TL on top of the 70 TL card deposit. That's roughly 320 TL total investment for complete transport freedom across the city. If you plan the Bosphorus cruise (~100 TL) or Princes' Islands ferry (~40 TL), add those separately. Better to overload slightly — unused balance stays on the card.
